isolatedmix 109 - Andy Green / Verdant Recordings

isolatedmix109.png

Back when I used to post a lot more mixes here on ASIP, Andy Green and his Verdant Recordings alias was featured quite a few times on the site. It’s a reminder of the magical small worlds we operated in as we stumbled across similar Soundcloud profiles or even personal websites with nothing but MP3 links and text docs with tracklists. It seems like a minefield nowadays to hunt down something special - so much choice - in both good and bad ways. So seeing Andy contribute to the isolatedmix series all these years later and being able to follow his progress with the Verdant Recordings label is a nice reminder of the early years.

Andy seems to have organically progressed through the years in a similar path to me, in fact. From a pure-music fan to compiling mixes across a variety of styles and now, curating a label, Andy’s always been in and amongst our small world and it’s a delight to finally invite him here to curate an isolatedmix.

Hi Andy. It looks like you've been running Verdant Recordings for about five years now. I notice you state that the label is unconstrained by genre, which is something I admire and try to uphold with ASIP too. What filters do you apply when looking for a label release?

Yes, it’s nearly 5 years and only 10 records released so I am rather selective and the projects take shape very slowly. I’m essentially trying to build a catalog that reflects my own evolving and diverse tastes by reaching out to established producers I really admire or new producers whose talents need a place to be heard. It is personally enriching to have had a handful of previously unreleased artists being heard for the 1st time via the label. The next record will feature the wonderful Jo Johnson as part of an ambient double 12. Our collaboration was first discussed at the inception of the label back in 2016 and in some respects, the music she has composed has benefitted from the time taken since then. The project's working title is ‘Less Popular Than Cats’ and also includes Reedale Rise, Outlier and !nterject!on…... if enough folk are keen to own a copy it should be available by the summer.

As a fellow label-head, what do you find most challenging about running a label?

I find promoting a mystery and difficult and it’s not in my nature to push the label on social media (which seems to be essential for smaller labels in current times). I also struggle telling people that I’m not able to release some of the wonderful music they are generous enough to send me….. and especially if they are somebody I know.

You're based in the UK so how do you see Brexit impacting your label operations? If at all?

I’m running the label purely for my own pleasure and quite a rubbish label manager when it comes to the business side. Brexit is a total shit-show and I’m (not) dealing with it by moaning and sticking my head in the sand. I see the impact now principally through the eyes of a collector, noticing that record prices from Europe have increased by 25% in recent months and shipping has become ridiculously expensive with an extra dose of extortion to add salt to the wound. I know that I cannot collect as much music now, so I fear sales will decline for everyone… I hear from vinyl die-hards that they’ll be buying digital music in the future.

You recently released 'Changing Seasons' on your Vertex label Project which I managed to pick up over here in the US and it features an ASC ‘Grey Area’ remix which sounds very much like his Comit output. I didn’t know the track was on there at the time, until I asked the store to give it a spin whilst I was browsing, and then shouted "hey this sounds like Comit?!" How did you go about choosing remixes for this project?

Jamie (Exalt) and I really are very proud of this Vertex project and it’s been a pleasure getting to know and work with Jonas over the last couple of years. The original was ostensibly a dub techno album but aimed at home listening and so the remix project was our attempt to toughen up some tracks but avoid doing straight-up dub techno remixes. We discussed remixers and between us reached out to some admired and favorite producers. I’ve probably collected more records of James (ASC) than anyone else in recent times so I was thrilled to secure his talents and that remix IS sublime. Similarly, having Mike Schommer onboard fulfilled another ambition. It's only just to acknowledge GRIT’s chunky take and of course, Bjarnar’s (Ohm) charming ‘Morning Glory’ who is a long-standing friend of Jonas and chuffed to say of mine now too. Coming back to the ASC remix there’s a good back story about the composition. The closing ambient section wasn't there initially and I had the nerve to ask James to develop what was a great remix already. It turns out he’d already had the identical idea and so the longer track became the remix he really wanted to make for us from the start and the one I really wanted to hear. He's also mentioned to us that it’s one his favorite remixes he’s recorded in recent times.

I was posting your mixes on ASIP over 10 years ago now (many are archived on the old site, unfortunately) but you've obviously been compiling mixes for a while, how did you get into it?

I was a very late starter when it came to mixing music though I have danced, listened and collected for over 3 decades now. My first few years of mixing were focused on ambient and experimental music simply because I assumed it was easier and the mix for you back then was actually one of the earlier podcasts requested. Nowadays, I record mostly beat-driven music but my passion for ambient music remains and it’s a treat to do this for ASIP again after the gap. For the record, I’ve since appreciated that a well-mixed ambient set is harder to achieve than boshing out a techno set.

Your mix, is therefore a suitably deep affair. Can you tell us a little bit more about what you had in mind putting it together?

The majority of my mixes are rather spontaneous and I don't tend to pour over track selections or plan them out too carefully (this shows!) ….. Usually I aim for a feeling and go from there and so they tend to reflect my current headspace. Like many of us over the last 12 months, I have experienced some darker days but also a few good times. I recorded this a few days after a rare day last October….(Jane Fitz' and Jade Seattle’s Day Moves actually) where I had caught up with some lovely friends for the 1st time in nearly 9 months. When it came to the mix I think I was trying to channel some of the residual glow but also contrast that with that some of the more introspective moods we have found ourselves in. Thanks again for giving me the chance to share this experience.

*Now updated with Mixes that were posted online after the event*

Our good friends at Astral Industries were set to throw a weekend of music at Cafe OTO in London recently, but had to cancel due to the Coronavirus situation. Instead, we’ve teamed up to present a similar weekend over on our radio station, 9128.live.

During the event, we’ll be asking for a small donation of anything you can spare, to be split between Astral Industries (to help recoup the thousands lost on the cancellation), the artists involved and the South London Refugee Association, who provide expert advice, specialist services and effective support (made even harder given the current situation) to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in South London.

See 9128.live for the full schedule and to tune in.

isolatedmix 69 - Bersarin Quartett

One of the joys of being nearly 70 mixes into the isolatedmix series, is reflecting upon the many styles of mixes that artists have contributed. Straight-up playlist style curations, conceptual approaches, perfectly key-matched transitions, DJ mixes, genre or style showcases, or in the following instance, extensive, thoughtful journeys into a wide spectrum of influences.

Thomas Bücker aka Bersarin Quartett is likely a recognizable name to anyone who has dipped their toe into the modern classical world. Releasing primarily on the impeccable Denovali Records, his output has been modest, and yet extremely well respected under the Bersarin Quartett name, with many years of production prior under different names such as Jean Michel (if you choose to dig deeper).

His most infamous piece to date however, is undoubtedly his self-titled album released on German label, Lidar. Drawing comparisons with pretty much every beloved modern, neo, classical and ambient producer of our age in some shape or form with any review written so far, it's hard not to enjoy Thomas' approach. From downtempo, and jazz infused constructions, to experimental drone infused pieces, cinematic scores, and more intelligent electronic programming, Thomas has expressed himself through every potential connotation of ambient music across his modest catalog over the past few years.

Originally aired earlier this year on Barfly Radio, Thomas' mix was deserved of another platform given its carefully considered track listing, slowly shifting sections and unearthing of many beautiful pieces. I had to bring it to a wider audience. Clocking in at 2-hours long, this is one of those life-affirming mixes - the kind of mix you remember exactly what you was doing when you first heard it, and the kind of journey any potential mix-curator longs to put together.

We spoke as Thomas prepared for two upcoming festival dates (June 2nd, Bielefeld, Germany, and July 6th, Tolmin, Sajeta Festival, Slovenia) and he had this short and sweet intro to the mix:

"Hi, I´m Thomas from the Bersarin Quartett, and I´m glad to share with you a new mixtape at this beautiful strangely isolated place. This mix takes 2 hours and it contains some of my favorite film scores and other cinematic tracks I like a lot at the moment. So turn off the lights, take a deep breath and enjoy the ride ... "

ASIP - Reflection on 2016

2016 was a busy year! The label started with the Arovane & Hior Chronik Remix EP, then Merrin Karras' glorious synthesizer piece, Apex. And more recently, the much-desired 36 album, The Infinity Room.  It was also a very sad year in many ways, with ASIP artist, Igor Bystrov aka Parks, passing away. The In Memory EP, featuring a collection of his works was also released, with all proceeds going to Igor's family. Thank you to everyone who supported the label and the artists throughout 2016 - I can't express how grateful I am to have such an amazing bunch of listeners and supporters.

It was an amazing year for music. I was overwhelmed for the most part, and didn't get round to writing about half as many albums as I would have liked to. But my yearly Reflections mix goes some way in helping soothe my guilt and pain. Featuring many of my favorite tracks from some of my favorite albums and releases from the year, it's my version of the infamous journo 'best-of' list but presented in the best way possible I start with a playlist including one track from every album I've enjoyed over the year, and then whittle it down, based on what sounds right in the mix and ultimately, what I've been listening to the most. It goes without saying, this only scrapes the surface of the many great albums and releases we've been treated to in 2016.

A quick run down of the inclusions in this years mix...

Sad Elron, the one track I spent the year looping, was the standout in one of this years best albums from Mark Pritchard. Bvdub surprised us with a selection of shorter-than-normal cuts, and potentially his best album yet. The Green Kingdom is this years under-the-radar gem, cutting up dubby-ambient and post-rock. Steve Hauschildt topped the year of the synthesizer, as did Phaeleh, with outstanding albums on both fronts. ASC made a sneaky retro-electronica appearance as Comit. Synkro enlisted the best for his remix EP - with Helios providing a glorious take, alongside a superb album of his own. Jesse Somfay returned after over 5-years with a unique and exciting new album. Segue turned in da-dub as usual on the ever-brilliant Silent Season. Isan made a return with their quirky melodic electronica. The Orb made an attempt to out-chill-out the Chill Out. Ametsub dropped a sneaky jazz-infused ambient piece. Tangent proved the newcomer of the year on n5MD. Jóhann Jóhannsson should be on the front-cover of Time magazine as man of the year with his outstanding score for Arrival and another complete masterpiece in Orphée. Heck got the remastering and reworking of choice by Field Rotation's Christopher Berg. Ocoeur got our year off to a stunner with his modern-classical masterpiece. Eluvium won the hearts of everyone with his operatic tearjerker. Drape kept Infraction's continually brilliant ambient output up-to-scratch. Warmth treated us to one of the years best ambient surprises. Deepchord turned in one of the years best remixes - out-ambienting Wolgang Voigt's flip. Benoit Pioulard broke his wrist and showed us how to remix Aphex Twin. Porya Hatami and Arovane joined forces once again book-ending their ASIP remix EP.  And lastly, as a special tribute, we end the mix on one of my favourite tracks by Park from 2009 - RIP.

And breathe. Enjoy the look back.

Peter Michael Hamel - Colours of Time, re-interpreted

As I gear up to see Deepchord for the very first time this Friday in LA (event details), I'm reminded of the beauty this man can deliver, listening to his upcoming split-EP alongside Wolfgang Voigt, re-imagining Peter Michael Hamel.

Seen as one of the earliest pieces of ambient music, Peter Michael Hamel's epic space-synthesizer score from 1980 has been re-imagined by two modern electronic pioneers at the top of their game - two dream remixers for any producer. Split between the two sides and taking in over 19-minutes each, it's a rarity to not only see these two producers on the same record, but a privilege to be treated to such extended and intricate productions.

From the opening moment, Deepchord sets a tranquil ambient tone, with his Carolina Forest Mix. The sound of flowing water and meandering, gorgeous atmosphere slowly intensify, until the mood changes around 12-minutes in and the forest becomes darker, with less life and a more ominous tone. This forest began as an inviting, enchanting place, only to descend into an uncharted territory. The attention to detail, the slowly evolving story and swells of beats remind me of Voices From The Lake, only without the spur of synthesizers.

Given the tone of Deepchord's remix and its similarities to Wolfgang's Voigt's early work as Gas, you're left wondering whether this remix EP actually set out to become a masterclass in ambient music. But as the title suggests, Wolfgang's Neokraut Trip plays much closer to the original and deflects any thoughts of a dubby, Gas performance, keeping the epic synth from Peter's original score, yet adding a signature Pop-Ambient sound that's so familiar across Kompakt's ambient releases and especially, the likes of Thomas Fehlmann's infamous Gute Luft. Time and time again, Wolfgang pushes the definition of ambient music and in this instance, his appreciation of the original and curiosity surrounding the original piece helps create a glorious extended score, similar to the structure and approach to his recent productions in Rückverzauberung.

There's no doubt this is the must-own record of 2016 for any ambient fan - but you knew that already purely by the veteran remixers at hand. The difference being, this one truly lives up to the combined years of experience between them both.

Colours of Time, re-interpreted will be available on July 25th on 180gsm 12", on Astral Industries.
