bvdub vs Earth House Hold - Fantasies of the Anachronist

Screen Shot 2020-04-29 at 11.03.39 AM.png

You should know by now our fandom for not only Brock’s mixes, but also his Earth House Hold project. We’re a happy home for his ‘House-ier’ vein as EH, but rarely do you get full DJ mixes from Brock that push into this world. Brock’s latest isolatedmix certainly went darker, and dirtier, but didn’t quite nudge into full House mode - the fledgling roots of the bvdub and EHH sound.

It’s genuinely one of the best ‘DJ’ mixes I’ve heard in quite some time. Brock dug hard for the music contained, presented it in one coherent concept; seamlessly and like any true DJ set, with a solid vibe continued from beginning to end. I say that like im surprised, but every one of Brock’s mixes is approached in this way - this one just a hit a note, as it’s a little different from the bvdub norm.

The mix comes from a new channel on a platform called Currents.fm. This platform looks like it takes some explaining to fully grasp at first, but essentially, you’re paying/tipping (or in Brock’s case, you don’t have to pay) for a curator. I am a firm believer in curation, and its need in culture and pushing music forward, so it’s an interesting aspect that at first might seem weird (“why aren’t I paying the artists/ for the music here?”) Let’s take stock on a couple of points which I think, make this an interesting approach to curation.

One, DJ’s, are (or should be) paid. They spend their life digging to expose music to an audience (good ones, anyway). This could be seen as the virtual equivalent. Sure, not all curators might have “purchased” the music they present like a DJ might have in a record store, but is this better than you going and creating your own Spotify playlist? Times are changing and music is democratized. We need some new innovative ways to funnel $ out of the hands of corporations and back into the creators. With the links to buy and ease of integrations, it certainly makes it easier to support music that watching a live stream or ploughing through Spotify playlists.

Two, on the topic of Spotify, we need authenticity and trust. That ‘Piano Chill’ playlist you might (not)love? Who curated it? Do you trust them as music curators? Or wait, is it just a bot updating a playlist based on popularity and deals with record labels (not to mention the fake artist saga). Blogs are on the decline, and information is on the rise - who’s helping weed out the good from the bad? We need human curators now more than ever.

So while the idea of paying a curator (or in Brock’s instance, the actual artist who doubles as a DJ) might seem detached at first, I’d argue it could also be seen as an interesting new avenue. Just because the music industry hasn’t worked out a model to drip this $ down to an artist yet, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and explore new ways of building community, DJs, music sharing and support. This might just be the first step of many.

Sorry for the tangent from such a great mix, but I thought it was worth divulging on how it’s being presented as well, given its different approach.

todos: Ten Years of A Strangely Isolated Place

todos_tenyears_1000.png

The impossible task. Find a way to summarize the last ten years of music featured on the A Strangely Isolated Place blog and website.

First off, we have created the ‘tagged’ project, listing some of the hundreds of artists featured on the blog for you to explore over here. And pretty soon, we’ll have a special release for you all.

But I also wanted something that was closer to our blog beginnings, and a story told through a mix. What better way than tasking our favorite journey-maker, todos.

todos and his Kilchurn Sessions have been a staple of ASIP over the past ten years. We’ve even collected them all in one place, given how many posts they ended up spanning. I don’t need to add many superlatives about him here, but they are some of the best recorded mixes I have ever heard. And I mean it. You can hold-up (my personal favorite) professional mixed CD’s by Sasha, or James Holden for example, and I would be just as pleased listening to some of todos’ Kilchurn Sessions. He has a knack, a perfection and an obsession with mixing unique journeys that span everything from ambient, electronic, techno and instrumental elements, alongside a unique use of samples and movie quotes. He creates familiar and emotive narratives that need multiple revisits to appreciate the detail, skill and passion he put in.

Once todos agreed to my ask (nearly a year-ago now) I sent him the archive of posts from the old site, and a list of all the tags used across both new and old. My only criteria was that he needed to select tracks from artists or albums that were a part of that list - an attachment to ASIP and the blog. He had hundreds to sift through, some known, some new to him.

I don’t know how he did it.

I do know it was a headache for him, for months, but what he turned in, was something well beyond my expectations. He went through many iterations and different approaches, trying to do one chronologically in the order they were featured on ASIP for example, sending me revisions up until the very last minute, but in the end, he managed to find a selection of tracks that truly reflect the past ten years of discovery here on ASIP. And in a style only he knows how to execute.

A big BIG thank you to todos for soundtracking ASIP all these years. And for this, a superb piece of no-doubt painstaking work to help us celebrate ten-years of existence.

Once you’re done listening here, check out our ‘tagged’ project to explore even more.

36 - A Closer Listen 100 mix

image.jpeg

I haven’t posted a guest mix on here for quite some time (outside of the isolatedmix series of course). But this one has inspired me to get back to sharing great mixes we found out in the big wide world again, for a few reasons.

Namely, it’s a great mix by our very own Dennis Huddleston / 36. He’s chosen a few tracks and artists that have been recent discoveries for me too (and featured on a few of my past mixes), including Rashida Prime and Sangam. Both these artists are well-known in the Vaporwave arenas but essentially, offering what we classic ambient fans know as some deep and futuristic/space styles of ambient music. These fall alongside the great GAS, a classic space-ambient track from Michael Sterns and a track from another album I’ve enjoyed recently on Music From Memory by Terreke.

Additionally, this marks a major moment for A Closer Listen. ACL have been releasing mixes for years now, and this marks their 100th and final installment - in its current form at least. Going by the text on ACL, it looks like they will have several other new exploratory / mix inspired avenues coming soon, which sound extremely promising.

For now, escape to the latest from 36 and read his mini-interview with ACL with a nod to an upcoming release….
