David Elpezs - A Way For The Signal

This live mix by David Elpezs caught my ear recently, due to its breadth of ambient styles - an accomplished sound for a relatively unknown artist. David is however known well in his native country of Spain, and runs a Radio show/podcast called Electromagnética, as well as featuring on John Beltran's Music For Machines last year with, Brisa. So maybe it's just me playing catch up...

The tracks featured in the mix are taken from some his recent releases, which are all available on Bandcamp.

Optic Echo Presents – Best Vinyl of 2015

Mike Jedlicka's Optic Echo radio show consistently serves up some of the best ambient, experimental and modern classical vinyl-only selections. In this special edition, Mike has curated some of his favorite vinyl of the year specially prepared for Headphone Commute.

As you would expect from a weekly show trying to summarize a years worth of wax purchases, it was no doubt an arduous task narrowing it downvand the result is a lovely journey through the many styles Mike covers on his show.

Mike's included some of my favorite vinyl of the year too, namely Night Sequels, 36, wndfrm, Benoit Poulard and Inventions, all sitting proudly in my best of 2015 lists. And a big thanks to Mike for also selecting Arovane & Hior Chronik's release.

todos - Kilchurn Session XIII

It dropped in my inbox as a surprise, the best possible kind of surprise, because todos' Kilchurn Sessions have been known to take quite some time to put together.  It's been nearly six months since Session 12, and with that amount of time under his belt to collect his next edition, you can expect only the very best to hit you in the 13th.

Once again opting for his trademark mix of new, old, classics, edits and samples, todos' journeys have become slightly deeper over the past few editions, and this one is no different, albeit punctuated with a few rather sublime lead vocal tracks.

He has left us all with another bunch of artists to dig deeper into, including, Body Boys, Alaskalaska and Landside, whilst reminding us of a few recent greats by Abul Mogard, Planet Boelex, and Segue, alongside some of the best new productions of the year from Synkro and Rival Consoles.

I always say it, and I'll say it again, todos manages to capture the essence of what a mixtape should be for me - the perfect blend of old and new, painstakingly curated and crafted with care with no agenda - just a journey.

todos - Cold Shoulders

After twelve Kilchurn Sessions, you can only imagine how many tracks todos has selected, filtered, tried and ultimately cut from the bunch. It's what makes a mix so time consuming - you can come up with a 'playlist' but most of the time, these tracks wont blend together well, don't flow well, or just don't belong. I personally have a list of tracks which never really fit well in a mix despite my ongoing efforts - it includes some of my favourite music ever, but some tracks just don't work well as  part of a larger mix.

In Cold Shoulders, todos, has  managed to conjure a solid journey out of the many tracks he has left behind over the past few Kilchurn Sessions. Despite its connotations, this is as attractive a mix as any of the Kilchurn Sessions, and may just be the greatest reject mix you've ever heard.

"The previous 3 Kilchurn Sessions have seen many great tracks dashed aside, either they didn’t fit the mix, the mood or the feeling at the time. At the end of the day, they didn’t make the cut! Here, I have put many of them together, in a mix of their own. It’s not an official Kilchurn but takes a similar approach. Less time was taken with it, hardly any edits done or pain staking samples tweaked and added.  It is a collection of great “rejects”. Hence the name ‘Cold Shoulders’ I hope you enjoy" - todos.
