9128.live still streaming, ambient adjacent music, free, 24-7: An update

Our radio station project, 9128.live is still alive and kicking. Crazy to think it’s been 6 years now since we launched. I recently stumbled into someone at a show who was with us for our all-weekend takeovers during the pandemic era, and he said it helped him get through one of the hardest times of his life. It was very humbling to hear, and despite rarely hearing these comments, it’s one of the reasons I still keep this thing alive.

I’m quietly updating music in the background on the station - of course, ASIP music is easy for me to keep updated in rotation, and a few other labels keep on top of things with new releases. without much fanfare.

Here are a few key updates that you might have missed:

New label partners

In the past year or so, we’ve added three amazing catalogs into rotation, including Quiet Details (just this week), Never Late, and Analog Attic. Between these 3 labels alone, we’re hosting some of the most majestic music to hit our ears in recent years. I’m also adding some one-off artist music into rotation, as some listeners get in touch with their own music that fits.

Memberships

We had a membership that enabled paying users to access unreleased and exclusive sets. I let this dwindle for far too long, so I’m sorry to anyone who kept going with it. But I’ve now canceled it fully as I don’t see the time or space to make this worthwhile right now. Thank you to everyone who helped us keep the station going with their contributions.

Listening apps

Not new news, but very importantly, we have both iOS and Android apps that enable you to listen to the stream, and they also host the isolatedmix series as a podcast too. A few other bells and whistles to check out too. Links to the apps here.

Sonos

One of my favorite ways to listen is actually through Sonos (at night) and it’s not too easy to make that happen. But essentially, you need to add the stations custom listen URL into your TuneIn app (once downloaded), then add the TuneIn Service to Sonos, and it should then show in your faves. See here for more ways to listen.

The 9128 label

When we had regular weekend takeovers, artists were preparing sets for their slots, many of which were original, so we decided to release some of these sets and begin the label. Check out the releases here, by Jo Johnson & Hilary Robinson, Gailes, 36 and Ameeva. With no pipeline for original releases, the label is on a bit of a hiatus, but I hope to spin this up again one day and may open up the catalog to live releases in general.

The future

Being transparent, the radio costs thousands of dollars to run and host each year. For now, it’s an investment and a bit of a vanity project because I use it so much myself. So a big thank you to everyone who donates to help with this cost. I hope I get to spend more time on the project in the near future, and bring back proper programming and weekend takeovers again. Until then, I’m doing my best to keep the lights on and keeping 24/7 ambient and electronic music flowing.

Thanks for tuning in.

New 9128.live iOS and Android apps

Our radio station (and sub-label) 9128.live has been up and running for over three years now. Born out of the lockdown period, it went on to host many great takeovers at a time when everybody was locked inside, and the station has grown slowly with music from a collective of amazing labels now in rotation, for always-on, 24/7 ad-free listening.

While the website is still a great place to listen and hosts the important chat, our Apps have not changed since day one and so we were excited to update them with a new look and functionality.

We were restricted as to what we could do with these, so while I know there is probably a wishlist of great things we could do if we had a clean slate, that was not the case. However, we think they’re a great improvement and will allow for a much better experience.

Here’s what you can expect from the new 9128 apps.

- Submit a song request - choose from a specific set of tracks that will evolve and change over time to include upcoming and unreleased music and other themed options. Requested tracks are entered into a queue and depending on queue length, will normally play after 2-3 tracks. Think of this like advanced previews on demand!

- View the radio schedule/calendar, including upcoming takeovers, showcases and regular radio shows such as the Espacio Perpendicular weekly radio show.

- View the latest news and updates from within the app.

- Listen to the ASIP/9128.live Podcast, which will include all the mixes from ASIP as well as 9128 exclusives, with more to come soon.

- Light and Dark modes (Default is Dark mode)

- Dynamic stream option (request a lower quality signal to save on mobile data)

- Push notifications! Never miss out on new and important updates (don’t worry we will use these very sparingly)

Download / update on the Apple App store

Download / update on Google Play store.

For the time being, the apps remain free of charge and ad free. We endeavor to keep them this way but they are not cheap to build and maintain, so grab them before we put a $ sign in front of them one day.

Don’t forget to leave us some glowing reviews and rate us 5* on each respective store!!

Thank you.

Mostra Takeover on 9128.live Sept 17/18th

Join us this weekend, September 17/18th on 9128.live, as we repeat an immersive listening experience from Barcelona’s recent Mostra Festival and the ambient/experimental-focused Hangar stage.

Beginning on Saturday morning and running for 13hrs, we will repeat some of the many sets that debuted at Mostra this past April, including live and DJ sets from:

Balmat
D.Humo
LF58
LOG
Nono
Timnah Sommerfeldt
Vicki Siolos
Ylia

“Mostra is more than a festival: it seeks to offer an alternative experience that brings us closer to the city. We want those who call Barcelona their home to make this position their own and to feel it belongs to them. That's why we're working to create a network in the scene among collectives, labels, artists, record shops, and other agents in the city.

Because we believe that the new normal must be to cooperate and create community. Barcelona needs a festival like Mostra: we are here to join forces and become a benchmark for a new type of festival with its own identity, committed to what’s local, what’s inclusive, and what’s sustainable.” More on the festival

Ameeva / Die Wellen (9128-4)

Out today on our sub-label 9128.live, an incredible live performance by Ameeva, which we had the pleasure of hosting last year during the 9128 anniversary takeover. Now available on digital and a limited edition cassette box with UV printed foil.

Born in Girona, Spain and based in Berlin since 2019, Alex Bussé Santacruz's Ameeva project previously came to life on the Lowless music label in 2020 and the album 'Fractura del Sueño'. His live set for the 9128 Birthday event took these experimental electronics to a deeper, more personal level, weaving friends' samples and conversations into a rich tapestry of drone and field recordings, creating an immersive and enveloping 40-minute narrative.

Available on Bandcamp, and Juno.

The 9128 label aims to document significant live performances by artists that previously performed on the 9128.live platform. With recordings initially created for a singular collective listening moment, and often as part of a festival or takeover weekend, label recordings will re-present this music for further listening across various formats that best suit each release.

Jo Johnson & Hilary Robinson / Session One (9128-1)

The inaugural 9128.live label release came from the UK’s Jo Johnson and Hilary Robinson, and is now available on 12”. Featuring subtle, harmonic drones and manipulated piano, originally aired as part of the duo’s set for the CALMA (Madrid) takeover on 9128.live, the vinyl edition was cut by Andreas LUPO Lubich, and new vinyl side masters prepared by Rafael Anton Irisarri.

Jo Johnson was a guitarist with punk band Huggy Bear in the 90s, inspired by and aligned with the riot grrrl and queercore movements. She organized underground techno parties with Bleep43 in the early 2000s and founded the crew’s label. Since 2012 she has explored experimental, minimalist music and her debut LP Weaving was released on Further Records in 2014.

After a classical training with composers including Kaija Saariaho, London-based composer, pianist and sometime vocalist Hilary Robinson is active across genres from contemporary classical concert music to experimental. Her music has been performed at festivals such as the UK’s 'Music We’d Like to Hear' and broadcast on BBC Radio.
