ASIP - En Pausa Festival / Conexión

En Pausa 1.3 Conexión Negro.jpg

April 18th witnessed another big takeover on 9128.live with En Pausa festival.

Alex Albrecht, Ario, Chris SSG, Federico Duránd, Gigi FM, Karim, Klara Vedis and Patricia Wolf, plus a live performance by Jo Johnson & Hilary Robinson was the order of the day. Now all of the DJ sets can be heard once again online, including my own.

My mix leaned into the notion of “En Pausa” and “Conexion” with a patient and slowly unraveling mix that focused a lot on ASMR, featuring lots of small vocal samples and textures.

And as always, there were some unreleased ASIP bits along the way.

Hope you enjoy it.

James Bernard / Matrices (ASIP036)

ASIP036 Bandcamp DIGITAL Record MockUp.jpg

James Bernard's extensive productions have run the spectrum of electronic music over the past 25+ years. His first outing on ASIP was a delicate modular synth excursion (Atwater, 2019) and his Unreleased Works 1994-1999 (coming to ASIP this Summer, 2021) are a rabbit hole into the Ambient Acid Era.

While we wait for this extensive collection to be presented, James has prepared a very special set of music for Bandcamp Friday which doubles down on his more refined, emotive ambient work. Limiting himself to an OP-1 Synthesizer, and his six-string Bass Guitar, whilst conceptually restraining each track to just five elements, each one focuses on a simple motif, accentuated by further looping to create a mixture of complex melodies and immersive, shifting structures.

Composing this EP helped James calm in a time of uncertainty across the globe. The final title track ‘Matrices,’ is the culmination of those hard emotions and is meant as a call to empathy.

ASIP - atmoteka 88 (DnB mix)

An invite to contribute to the brilliant Atmoteka mix series had been extended to me a while back, but I have never put together a solely DnB focused mix so wasn’t going to rush into such an effort. But after becoming inspired by the likes of our Illuvia release, Ludvig’s isolatedmix, SpyrosPortal’s feature, not to mention a whole host of amazing DnB influenced releases making a resurgence this year and filling my shelves, it seemed like the time had come…

Here’s my accompanying text to the mix.

Thank you to Atmoteka for inviting me to contribute to the series. I haven't put together a 100% focused DnB mix before, so it was a fun undertaking. There are plenty more knowledgeable people than me in the DnB genre (many of you listeners no doubt), so I didn't try to overthink the tracks that went into it too much - whether they were underground, brand new, well-known, classics or not. Instead, I picked tracks that I love through and through for many different reasons, and did my best to work them into a narrative. It became more of a "mixtape" in style with chapters, ups and downs, layering, and a few small loops or edits.

I don’t often say this about my mixes, but it’s one of the most enjoyable I’ve had the pleasure of putting together.

Head over to the Atmoteka Soundcloud to listen and download directly and pay a visit to some of the other amazing mixes in the series from the likes of ASC, Seba and Blu Mar Ten, to name just a few DnB heavy-hitters!

9128.live takeover: Rapture Network

teaser.png

I’m very excited to announce our next weekend takeover on 9128.live. Rapture Network is a group of amazing music heads that focus on the many types of trance-inducing styles of electronic music. Like walking into a record store and finding the experts behind your favorite type of music, the digging is endless.

They’re some of the most knowledgeable people I know on the topic, so expect some very well-curated and mixed sets plus a lot of frantic, empty Shazam calls…

Hidden from view in a small cubby of the internet there resides a close-knit tribe. Gathering from almost every continent, from all ages, they come daily to share the music they love and discuss the psychedelic culture that inspires them.

It’s a community built of shared excitement, musical obsession, mutual respect and loving vibrations. DJs, producers, dancers, video artists, collectors, visualisers, label owners, party promoters… and all listeners… with a shared vision, and a common ear.

Rapture Network is “basically a trance group”. But trance in the very broadest and most imaginative sense. Hear what they love and what they do on May 14-16, as we host 50+ DJ’s for an expanse of music, creativity and ideas.

Enter the Rapture. Enjoy this trip.

Now available: Comit / An Ocean Of Thoughts

ASIPV029 Vinyl Record PSD MockUp.png

After the success of 2019’s Remote Viewing, I was keen to see James Clements going with his newly established Comit alias, so it was a pleasant surprise when he turned around a very quick successor to his debut album. It may have taken a few years to come to life (as most vinyl releases do) but I’m excited to present another beautiful slice of IDM and early 00’s electronica-inspired music from James, titled An Ocean Of Thoughts.

I’m also pleased to see Nick Brzostowski back on artwork duties. As our first artist we worked with on an ASIP vinyl and a life-long friend, it was only a matter of time before Nick returned with his beautiful, intricate textures, which we first witnessed with Europe, and Markus Guentner’s Theia.

View the release page to listen to Comit’s, An Ocean of Thoughts and all links to buy, available as a Gatefold 2LP and digital, mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri.
