Dustin Morris – Waterscape I (ASIP Exclusive)

It’s got to a point with some labels that nearly every release they put out, I want to feature on the site. Sometimes I don’t have the time, sometimes I forget and things pass me by, so, instead of letting all that good music go unheard, i’ve decided to put together a few features on my favourites. Up first, we dive into the world of Dewtone, with label founder, Dustin Morris.

Dewtone are responsible for two of my favourite EP’s of the past two years; Brando Lupi – Aural, and Martin Nonstatic – Cosmic Shapes. And the rest on the roster aren’t far behind. Dustin has kept his output consistent, with quality and style ever since the first release, and boasts an amazing bunch of artists under the Dewtone umbrella including Brando, Martin, Alveol/Purl (Ludvig Cimbrelius), Marco Madia,HaloSyeneAli KhanMeeshaAntendex, and Nadia Popoff – all of which, were previously new to my ears.

I had originally asked Dustin to compile a mix featuring music from the label (given it’s all pretty much amazing) but instead, he chose to expand on this approach and also incorporate the other major creative half of Dewtone – Dewtone Radio. This mix is indeed something special, expertly curated, and a true insight into Dewtone, it mimics the very essence of the label, with soft textures, beautiful melodies and pictures of calm waters, scattering clouds and dusky sunsets. Neatly tied together with an inspired theme; ‘Waterscapes’ is the first of potentially many similar mixes which Dustin will endeavor to complete.

The goal with this mix was to showcase some of the music that is being promoted through Dewtone Radio. I didn’t want to focus exclusively on the label because that’s just a small chunk of the audio that I’ve been working with over the last few years. When I started working on this project, I realized that there was no way I was going to be able to say everything I wanted to say with just one mix. The music ended up working together beautifully in a way that I was able to produce complete soundscapes that almost sounded like one piece.

Mach V – Send In The Drones

Send In The Drones. Send in the beauty. Send in the classic ambient. Send in a few upcoming releases whilst you’re at it. Send in Mach V.

If you want any of the above, look no further as our favourite curator of all things musically brilliant, Mach V has put together a sublime ambient mix. Over one year in the making, Mach V has been intending to produce a ‘drone’ mix for some time now, but just as I find when mixing, he had little influence on what made the cut when faced with such amazing music. The drone is in there, but it’s peppered with some beautiful moments that break the drone-only mould and keeps this mix interesting throughout.

Like a true gentlemen, Mach V has paid homage to his sources and included some kind words about ASIP and the brilliant Futuresequence in the write-up. He’s also included an exclusive we were lucky enough to receive from Umber and two upcoming tracks from the ASIP Places Series too. One from Ex Confusion and another from Mach V’s audio-visual maestros, Echaskech. More to come on those releases soon, but for now, go ahead and join the inspiration of Jean “Moebius” Giraud and drift away with the drones.

You can read the full post on Mach V’s blog here. Also included below is a brilliant video put together by Mach V and featuring ‘626’ by Echaskech, forthcoming on the ASIP Places Series.

Keith Kenniff – IDM Mix

Keith Kenniff, known for his blissful work as Helios and Goldmund, has gone all IDM with this dig into some of his favourites of the genre. Don’t be fooled into thinking you’re about to lose sight of the gentle tones and melodies often associated with Keith’s work. He quotes, that these are some of his most influential tracks from the genre and there’s a reason for that…

These tracks are beautiful at the core and wrapped in Helios’ awesomeness, but with the extra oscillating beat and bleep, accentuating an otherwise familiar feeling you get from Keith and somehow attaining the always debated ‘IDM’ label. Anyone who’s ever been into IDM or electronica will relate to the tracklist Keith’s put up here, with some of my favourites including; Casino Vs Japan, Brothomstates, Arovane and Hermann & Kleine.

This is a prime example of when labelling by genre doesn’t matter. IDM it may be, quality music’s what it is.
